One of my friends has entered a long distance thingy. You know a thing were the boy is far away and they do air kisses into the phone. They met on a whirlwind tour of Manhattan, they swept each other off their feet, both aloof and with much fanfare, enough for me to gag and well be a tad bit well annoyed at my single status.
Now I watch my friend text message pictures of himself, as he wakes up, to his boyfriend when he wakes up. Okay, so I’m not there for the actual picture taking; which is a good thing. Yet I am there for the fawning, that can last a whole hour. And the text messaging, did I mention they take pictures of each other a few times a day and send them to each other.
So I’m wondering. What the hell did gay boys in long distance relationships do before camera phones were invented? I don’t have the answer to this daunting question. All I know is that a bit over a year ago this type of relationship was in no way possible. I mean the contraption these two call a cell phone could probably run the economy of a third world country.
I watch and wait, they’re soon to fly away and see each other in person; they have plane tickets and stuff like that lined up. I read boysbriefs, that couple made a long distance relationship work, now they’re getting married.
I just know that I could never do it. I’m too insecure and too needy for someone three thousand miles away. Yet love can be found anywhere and a large part of me wants to think that technology will truly bring the world closer together and make love just a bit easier to realize.
i think they posted polaroids in the old days. par avion.
