Yesterday at work, I was struck by the guest that walked into The Restaurant.
Now for those that know me. I’m not one to be easily star-struck. I’m actually into very random people, mostly authors and people that have contributed lots to society. Above all they need to be cool. When meet in person. I also have no use for idle celebrity gossip, because so much of the stuff seen in papers and in rags. Well it’s just purely fake. Besides, Jay-Lo or whatever her name is; is really short once met and most Celebes are really old. Pamela Anderson for instance. When checked her into the Essex House, I noticed keenly her many sun spots and much wrinkled skin. So the illusion of Hollywood has never interested me. Only the stories and the actual person behind the carefully crafted image (refer to the very famous Richard Avedon photo of Marilyn) that’s what fascinates me.
So when Uma Thurman walked in. Tall, elegant and very blond, she struck me as a thoroughly interesting star. Seeing her in a floppy winter hat was also a treat. The host, not quite knowing who she was, directed her to the “Lounge” a place of comfy very modern couches - all done in black, you can dine roman style and have a cocktail - while facing the entire restaurant.
I also have a tendency of knowing nothing about Celebes until they walk into the place I work. The staff of The Restaurant is always aware. We have a highly developed system of communicating, to spread the word that a noted person has walked in. Such as; in this case. I run to the coffee station and scream. “Oh My God, it’s Uma Thurman, she’s so hot.” Do a little dance and walk out. The managers have to also confirm the Celeb sighting, as the staff starts to become aware, there's a buzz of excitement - as we glide from table to table. The kitchen is informed, so they don’t screw up the order, as is the bar; cocktails go out flawlessly and quickly. The host issues a citation and the check is modified with a name in the point of sale system.
Uma Thurman was shortly joined by a very hunky and very hot man; I found out later it was Andre the hotel something or other. They make the hottest couple. I watched them kiss and make out. Truly snuggle on the couches. Seeing Uma in love was a true treat, something I’ll remember for a long time. She actually beamed and felt very sure of herself in public. Some Celebes try to hide. Not her; the funny thing is, most guests are unaware. They not only can’t see the real person, because they think the Star as a wholly different person in the Ether of their personal universe. We as a staff are also very protective. I would never let someone bother a Star in my section. That’s another reason we are so in tune. Besides, when it comes to it, they're just people.
Overall, it’s not every day. Someone more beautiful in person, then on the silver screen - with so much self confidence as to command a room, treats me - to showing themselves in love. It was wonderful to watch her in a mans arms and look so comfortable. So yes I’m sharing this moment with my readers. Only because Uma, YOU ROCK.
I guess part of me hopes; that, if she’s found love, so can I.
Inspiring...
