Homeland Security arrestes Vegan

Cory Doctorow: A vegan who picketed a ham store was surveilled by a Homeland Security spook, who arrested her for taking down his license-plate number. Tax-dollars well-spent. Nation well-defended. Once every person with a nonstandard dietary preference has been imprisoned, I'm sure we'll be able to leave our shoes on in the airport again.

An undercover DeKalb County Homeland Security detective was assigned to conduct surveillance of the protest and the protestors, and take the photographs. The detective arrested Childs and another protester after he saw Childs approach him and write down, on a piece of paper, the license plate number of his unmarked government car.

"They told me if I didn't give over the piece of paper I would go to jail and I refused and I went to jail, and the piece of paper was taken away from me at the jail and the officer who transferred me said that was why I was arrested," Childs said on Wednesday...

"We believe that spying on American citizens for no good reason is fundamentally un-American, that it's not the place of the goverment or the best use of resources to spy on its own citizens and we want it to stop. We want the spies in our government to pack their bags, close up their notebooks, take their cameras home and not engage in the spying anymore," Gerald Weber of the ACLU of Georgia said during a news conference.

The Third Party

Those three people that read this site daily know that I don’t often update raw posts, ie. posts that have not pilfered from other places and news feeds. I like it that way. For the real stuff, you know where to go. One Gay Date at a Time. I’ve been away from my computer for the past few days so I’m finally writing a response to the Alito confirmation, the State of the Union and the Cindy Sheehan eviction.

So beware, following is a tirade and quite passionate political post.

Where the bleep is a third party. I think history has taught us that in the absence of a true choice, this is about the time a third party, say the Bull Moose, storms in. I feel truly robbed actually, all in a few days I shake my head and hope for my future as an American, especially as a gay American fighting for my rights. The great divide between the center of this country and the two coasts, that canyon is deeper then ever. The Democrats especially are just turning into wimps. I don’t know why they’re holding back so much. Bush is in political hot water with one scandal following another, his administration is scrambling to cover up and cover up and cover up.

I always think that things will turn out for the better; even if society back peddles every once in a while, yet with Alito now on the bench, I’m scared that we won’t just wave our rights away, I’m afraid we’ll start flushing them down the toilet.

When I hear how many people would much rather watch American Idol then the State of the Union; I wonder about the average American’s ability to think. The standing notion from people that don’t want to get involved in politics, they simply state. “What happens in Washington doesn’t affect me, it’s to far away.” or “I’m just one person I can’t make a difference.”

I’m very frustrated with people that don’t want to get involved politically or don’t even want to consider watching the news. Trapped in their own bubble as the world around them changes. I’m really frustrated, yes. To watch our hard earned rights dwindle away. To understand that America is for the rich and it’s harder and harder to make it. I’m sad the President can spin to his defense such blatantly wrong things as bribes and wiretaps. What happened to being informed people? When did all of America turn dumb? Oh yeah, when education stopped being funded.

The health of a democracy depends on an educated and informed public, now that schools don’t really teach, I am scared for our future. I hope the next election will enact some change in the make up of Congress and that hopefully Democrats will grow a backbone. They’ve been quiet to long. I want another choice to vote for. I want someone that will defend my rights as an American.

The CBO sort of forgot

It never stops to amaze me how the CBO and the federal government can just forget to add numbers, I wish that I could do that on my taxes. Oh, yeah, I forgot, I'm not an elected official.

"Today, the Congressional Budget Office issued its ten-year budget outlook. According to their report, the 2006 federal budget deficit will be at least $337 billion, and deficits from 2006-15 will total $1.2 trillion. If we continue with President Bush’s economic policies the actual deficits will be much, much higher.

First, the CBO numbers exclude tens of billions of dollars in expected spending for Iraq and Katrina. Second, the long-term figures assume President Bush’s tax cuts, which overwhelming benefited the wealthy, will expire at the end of the decade.

To understand how tax cut extensions would ruin our long-term budget picture, look no further than the CBO report. Below are three important points from the report:

    1) CBO assumes Bush tax cuts will expire after 2010:“By statute, CBO’s baseline must project the future paths of federal spending and revenues under current laws and policies.”

    2) Little chance of tax cuts expiring:“The assumption that tax provisions will expire as scheduled has a significant impact on CBO’s projections. Many of the expiring provisions were enacted many years ago but are routinely extended, and most reduce [tax] receipts.”

    3) Effects on the budget would be severe:“[I]f all of the tax provisions that are set to expire over the next 10 years were extended, the budget outlook for 2016 would change from a surplus of $67 billion to a deficit of $584 billion“.

Marketing Brokeback Mountain

I actually noticed this trend, when I watched Brokeback Mountain surrounded by female viewers.

Now I have proof.

"At the same time, Focus has been marketing "Brokeback" as an epic romance aimed at women. The movie's poster advertises that "Love is a Force of Nature," and the movie's trailer shows seven shots of tender romantic and happy moments between Mr. Ledger's and Jake Gyllenhaal's characters and their respective wives and families. By comparison, only three shots in the trailer show husband-wife confrontations over the gay affair. (Focus executives say the marketing materials are the same nationwide.)"

Hamas Wins, Eke...

As I'm looking at the news, it's hard to understand and make sense, that yes Palestine is now a truly terrorist state. I can't help wondering what the Bush Administration will do. I believe I've heard that exit polls vary from the actual election results. I know the Administration won't recognize the government, yet how can one truly avoid the new white elephant in the region standing massive and rebellious.

"RAMALLAH, West Bank - Hamas won a huge majority in parliamentary elections as Palestinian voters rejected the longtime rule of the Fatah Party, throwing the future of Mideast peacemaking into question, officials from both major parties said Thursday.

Palestinian leaders huddled to determine what role the Islamic militant group will play in governing the territories.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas will ask Hamas to form the next government, with his defeated Fatah Party weighing whether to form a partnership or serve in the opposition."

Meth and the Emergency Room

A sharp increase in the number of people arriving in emergency rooms with methamphetamine-related problems is straining local hospital budgets and treatment facilities across the country, particularly in the Midwest, according to two surveys to be released in Washington today.

The studies, conducted late last year by the National Association of Counties, are another indicator of the toll the drug has taken on local communities, particularly in rural areas where social service networks are ill-equipped to deal with the consequences. In July, the association reported that an overwhelming number of sheriffs polled nationwide declared methamphetamine their No. 1 law enforcement problem.

White House Silent on Abramoff Meetings

WASHINGTON - The White House is refusing to reveal details of tainted lobbyist Jack Abramoff's visits with President Bush's staff.

Abramoff had "a few staff-level meetings" at the Bush White House, presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said Tuesday. But he would not say with whom Abramoff met, which interests he was representing or how he got access to the White House.

Since Abramoff pleaded guilty two weeks ago to conspiracy, mail fraud and tax evasion charges in an influence-peddling scandal, McClellan has told reporters he was checking into Abramoff's meetings. "I'm making sure that I have a thorough report back to you on that," he said in his press briefing Jan. 5. "And I'll get that to you, hopefully very soon."

Prison Gaurds Value Executionees Life

"Having suffered a heart attack back in September, Allen had asked prison authorities to let him die if he went into cardiac arrest before his execution, a request prison officials said they would not honor.

"At no point are we not going to value the sanctity of life," said prison spokesman Vernell Crittendon. "We would resuscitate him," then execute him.

But the barrel-chested prisoner's heart was strong to the end: Doctors had to administer a second shot of potassium chloride to stop it.

"It's not unusual. This guy's heart had been going for 76 years," said Warden Stephen Ornoski."

Bling H20: Bottled water for the Insane

Blingh20 Apparently there's a bottled water out there, that goes for $38 a pop. Surprisingly it's found a home and lavish market in LA.

From Cnn:"Much of the $38 is due to the "limited edition" bottle decked out in Swarovski crystals. Billed as "couture water," Bling H20, the marketing gibberish tells us, is "not for everyone, just those that Bling. So the question is, Do You Bling?" Oh, let's hope not."

From the website: "  Bling H2O is the inspiration of Kevin G. Boyd, Hollywood writer-producer. While working on various studio lots where image is of the utmost importance he noticed that you could tell a lot about a person by the bottled water they carried.

In Hollywood it seemed as if people flaunted their bottled water like it was part of their presentation. Whether the bottles had a cool shape or came from an exotic island, none truly made that defining statement. Bling H2O was fashioned to make that defining statement. The mission was to offer a product with an exquisite face to match exquisite taste. The product is strategically positioned to target the expanding super-luxury consumer market. Initially introduced to hand-selected athletes and actors, Bling H2O is now excitedly expanding it’s availability. Bling H2O has been featured at many recent celebrity events including the MTV Video Music Awards and television’s biggest event, The Emmys.

Bling H2O is pop-culture in a bottle. But it's not for everyone, just those that Bling."

Starbucks’ Heart of Darkness

Heartofdarkness Thanks to an array of disturbing mathematical calculations, some dorky-hot fellow has calculated the Starbucks Center of Gravity for Manhattan — the single location where you can be closest to all other Starbucks. Described as existing “somewhere between 5th and 6th, in between 39th and 40th,” this Starbucks is the Ground Zero of corporate coffee. If you can figure out the exact address, let us know — we’ll gladly spread the word and send the violent hippies to the proper protest location.

The First Gay Kiss; 4000 years old

Hidden for 4,000 years - is this the world's first gay kiss?

By Terri Judd
Published: 02 January 2006

As the "gay cowboy flick" Brokeback Mountain opens in Britain amid indignant protests from old Wyoming ranch hands, it emerged yesterday that such controversies are almost as old as art itself.

What may be the first depiction of a gay kiss was discovered in a 4,000-year-old Egyptian tomb, according to a recent conference at the University of Wales.

Their arms entwined, their torsos and noses touching Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep were painted together for eternity in an embrace usually associated with heterosexual couples of the 5th dynasty.

Just as there has been much wringing of hands and protestations that "there ain't no queer in cowboy"in Marlboro country over Ang Lee's portrayal of two gay ranch hands, this intimate pair have long been considered "problematic" to Egyptologists.

One of the largest and most beautiful of all the tombs in the necropolis at Saqqara, south of Cairo, the two men's final resting place was discovered in 1964. The archaeologist Ahmed Moussa made the rare find of two men of equal status buried together in a tomb decorated with images of them holding hands or locked nose to nose.

In a recent talk at the University of Wales on Sex and Gender in Ancient Egypt Greg Reeder explained that the affectionate embrace might suggest the pair were lovers. Describing an image of the two men tightly clasping each other in the offering chamber, Mr Reeder said: "Here, in the innermost private part of their joint-tomb, the two men stand in an embrace meant to last for eternity."

The official view by one of the world's most eminent Egyptologists, Zahi Hawass, is that they were brothers, perhaps even conjoined twins. Other eminent academics have also suggested the similarities in the names would suggest this to be the case and there is a danger that modern European eyes fail to resist the temptation of seeing the images as homoerotic. Nevertheless, the tomb has become a favourite for gay couples.

The "Tomb of the Hairdressers" or "Tomb of Two Brothers" as it has become known was in fact the burial place of King Niuserre's manicurists.

While the paintings do show wives and children, the two women are obliterated or omitted from a scene of a final banquet.

"Same-sex desire must be considered as a probable explanation," said Mr Reeder, adding: "We can only say for certain that the carvings show a profound intimacy between the two men, and the people who built the tomb were possibly unsure how to portray this."

Such depictions of the "love that dare not speak its name" have been setting art lovers and audiences all a flutter for years. The groundbreaking 1971 film Sunday, Bloody Sunday was the first mainstream movie to show two gay characters kissing while few forget the tabloid furore when Brookside aired the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss more than a decade ago. Since then countless soaps have followed suit while the Channel 4 series Queer as Folk broke all barriers with explicit sex scenes.

In the year that gay unions were legally sanctioned, it is unlikely that Brokeback Mountain will cause more than a few murmurs of protest on this side of the Atlantic. But as America's religious right continues to air its disapproval, their objections are being drowned out by loud accolades and applause as the film collecting numerous award nominations.

The New Toon Gay Outing is, Barbie

Religious right says Barbie is secretly promoting "bisexuality"
by John in DC - 1/02/2006 02:56:00 PM

Tinky Winky, Lenny the shark, and SpongeBob SquarePants move on over. The next child icon caught promoting the homosexual agenda is none other than BARBIE!!

The religious right is now attacking Barbie for promoting "gender confusion." According to the men at the Concerned Women for America, Barbie is urging kids to go bi:

"This is directed at children aged four to eight... that's a really young age to be directing something along the lines of bisexuality."

Yes, Barbie is making four year olds want to have sex with other four year olds of the same gender. And the Concerned Men would prefer that children have sex with four year olds of the opposite gender, I guess.

What's really going on here is that the religious right has been attacking Mattel for months, just like they went after Ford and Microsoft and Allstate and Kraft and every other major American company. This is just another way for them to attack Mattel and get Mattel to do something bigoted to make amends.

But claiming that Barbie is promoting bisexuality to four year olds, that's just whacked.

PS They also attack Barbie for not being a good Christian because good Christian girls only want to serve the Lord, get married, stay at home and have kids. I'm not making this up. I guess if you're a woman (or a doll) who wants a career, then you're a dyke.

Centenarian gets to first game

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (AP) -- At 103 years old, Leone Margaret McKenney couldn't see or hear much over the crowd's roars at her first Packers game -- but she had the time of her life.

"I will never forget this. It was a humdinger," the great-great grandmother said after the Sunday game. "I don't know when I have enjoyed anything as much as I enjoyed that."

McKenney had said she never got to a Packers game when she was younger because her husband wasn't "too keen about football" and she never had the opportunity, even though her family moved to the Green Bay area in 1947.

But she keeps a picture of legendary Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr in her apartment and wears Packers garb as she watches every game.

McKenney received the luxury box tickets from the owners of Renaissance Assisted Living in De Pere, where she has lived for five years.

Her occupational therapist accompanied her to assist with steps at the stadium because McKenney is recovering from a fractured hip.

On Sunday, Brett Favre threw his first touchdown pass in five games, giving the Packers a 23-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

"It was fabulous, and then to have a win," she said, "that was almost more than I could bear."

Calif. Gay Marriage Opponents Shift Focus

SAN FRANCISCO - One of two groups competing to put a gay marriage ban before California voters in 2006 has bowed out of the fight for now, saying the timing and political climate are not right to get such a measure passed.

Tuesday was the deadline for ProtectMarriage.com to submit the signatures needed to qualify for the June primary ballot one of two overlapping initiatives that would outlaw same-sex marriage and restrict domestic partnership rights.

Andrew Pugno, the group's legal adviser, said the signature drive had fallen about 200,000 voters short of the requirement for 591,105 signatures

Breaking: New York Too Expensive for Many Artists!

Buried in the Metro section, yesterday's Times finally noticed something odd: Apparently it's kind of hard to afford to live in New York these days if you're not a hedge-fund manager, and so the city is starting to lose some of its vaunted "creative class." We were busy trying to figure out under what definition this was news when we noticed an interesting -- and newsworthy, even -- fact near the end of the article:

The city's Department of Cultural Affairs, aware of the potential for brain drain in the arts, is working to create new housing and financing packages for people in the arts.... The city is also pursuing an arrangement to allow artists to invest in buildings with philanthropists putting up half of the money, with the agreement that they would get half the profits in a sale, a program without real precedent in New York.

This sounds like a fabulous idea, not only because maybe artists can actually afford real estate here with philanthropies putting up half the money, but also because what co-op board would say no with the Ford Foundation as your co-signer?

But we also see it raising a problem. Who exactly gets to count as an artist?

Which is to say: Bloggers do, right?

Gays and Lesbians Form Lucrative Demographic

"The annual market value of gays in America is an estimated $610 billion, according to advertising agency Prime Access, ABC News writes. And it grew more than 28 percent last year, as advertisers realized its a lucrative market they can't afford to ignore. But some companies have found themselves smack in the center of a political debate about gay rights. Ford, for example, has recently had the American Family Association threatening to boycott the company based on the automotive company's advertisements in certain gay publications.

But corporations have to "play to the largest audience," said Howard Buford, chief executive of Prime Access. He said that while there is always a significant layer of politics, "from a corporate point of view, there is a very clear business case to be made."

Yet Another Reason Not to Live in the Midwest

"Man faces 50 years for sex with bride, 14

FALLS CITY, Nebraska (AP) -- A 22-year-old man faces up to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to sexual assault charges filed after he impregnated and then married a 14-year-old girl.

Matthew Koso legally married the girl in Kansas after she became pregnant. The girl, 14-year-old Crystal Koso, gave birth August 24 to a girl, Samara.

Sentencing was set for February 7.

The case generated international media attention when Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning filed first-degree sexual assault charges against Koso in July. Koso's trial was scheduled to begin Thursday.

Bruning said that Koso is a friend of the girl's half brother and began a relationship with her when she was 12.

Nebraska requires people to be at least 17 before they can marry. State law also prohibits people 19 or older from having sex with those under the age of 16.

After the girl became pregnant, her mother gave permission for Koso to take her daughter across the state line to Hiawatha, Kansas. There is no minimum age for marriage in Kansas, but state law requires anyone under 18 wanting to marry to have permission of both parents or a guardian. If there's no parent or guardian, permission from a judge is required.

Koso's lawyer, Willis Yoesil, has said that the girl's mother and Koso's parents approved of the marriage. The girl's father has not lived with the family for some time.

Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius recently said she was asking legislators to establish a strict ban on marriage involving anyone younger than 16.

The governor said the legislation also should retain the requirement for parental or judicial consent for those age 16 or 17."

This is a bit creepy on a lot of different levels. Remind me again why gay marriage should be illegal.

New York Magazine discovers Roommates

"New York’ Explores World of Co-Habitating Paupers
READ MORE: New York Magazine, Real Estate, money

oldroomie.jpgIn this week’s issue of New York, there’s a stunning exposé on the dark underbelly of Manhattan real estate. We’d no idea, but apparently all sorts of people have these strange things called “roommates.” Crazy, right?!

Susanne Prosser is a bunch older than the “three really cool girls that go to FIT” who, like her, posted last week on Craigslist. And she’s far more established than the 24-year-old actor with the “bartending habit.” The 37-year-old marketing executive does have one thing in common with them, though: She needs a roommate. “It’s not just for people in their twenties anymore,” she says.

Wow, it’s like New York discovered a whole new CLASS of people making under seven figures. We can’t decide if this sort of journalism merits an Ellie, or editor Adam Moss’s head on a plate.

Nude photo lawsuit

"PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- A woman sued Yahoo Inc. for $3 million, alleging the Internet site failed to fulfill a promise to remove nude pictures of her from the Web.

Cecilia Barnes, 48, in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Multnomah County, claims an ex-boyfriend began posting unauthorized personal profiles of her containing the photos in December. The profiles included her e-mail address and work phone number.

The former boyfriend also engaged in online discussions in Yahoo chat rooms while posing as Barnes and directing men to the profiles, the lawsuit claims.

"Due to these profiles and online chats, unknown men would arrive without warning at plaintiff's work expecting to engage in sexual relations with her," the lawsuit claims.

Barnes sent Yahoo a letter in January saying she did not create the profiles and wanted them removed. Additional attempts to get Yahoo to remove them in February and March did not get a response, the lawsuit claims.

A Yahoo spokeswoman declined to comment, saying the company does not comment on pending litigation."

Number of Millionaires Hits Record

Tranny and John make NYP

Why am I always the last to hear? I met a friend for dinner last night, she lives down the block from this alleged incident. Reportedly it made quite a ruckus. What I want to know - Was the Tranny wearing Manolo Blahniks, after all it was the Upper East Side, "sweaty darling, sweaty darling, image, image."

"May 25, 2005 --  A man who arranged to meet a "woman" for oral sex in an Upper East Side apartment got more than he bargained for — first, the hooker turned out to be a man, then "she" stabbed him, and finally, "her" roommate sprayed him with Mace, police said.

Glenn McDowell, 37, was stabbed several times in the hands, abdomen and buttocks at around 3:30 p.m. after getting into a heated argument with the prostitute, who he thought was a woman when they met last month in an Internet chat room.

McDowell, of Brooklyn, arranged to meet Andrea Williams, 18, yesterday at an apartment on First Avenue near East 68th Street that she was illegally subletting, police said.

Williams allegedly agreed to perform oral sex on McDowell in exchange for $100.

The tranny told cops that while the sex act was going on, McDowell — not knowing his date was a he — asked to have intercourse.

Cops said that when Williams turned him down, McDowell turned violent and the tranny pulled out a knife.

That's when Williams' roommate, Marie Delince, 35, used Mace on both of them to end the fight, a police source said.

McDowell scrambled for the door, running out of the building and making his way to a pizza parlor.

He asked to use the bathroom, and customers noticed he was trying to stop the bleeding with napkins." [via NYP]

"New ethics cloud over Tom DeLay, Texas judge rules against PAC treasurer

HOUSTON, Texas (Reuters) -- Ethics questions swirling around U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay mounted Thursday when a Texas judge ruled that a committee formed by the powerful Republican had violated state law by failing to disclose $600,000 in mostly corporate donations.

State District Judge Joe Hart in Austin made the ruling in a lawsuit filed by five Democratic candidates defeated in 2002 by Republicans who received money from Texans for a Republican Majority, a political action committee founded by DeLay to help Republicans capture the Texas Legislature." Finally Washington is on our side again.

Speaking of gay marriage, the Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on to discuss the gay bashing amendment on Thursday. The notoriously anti-gay Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) will chair the hearing on "The National Consensus to Protect Marriage: Why a Constitutional Amendment is Needed."

I'm a little confused about who they are protecting marriage from....and how they are going to protect it. This AP piece from November 2004 hits the nail on the head....what about divorce? Seems that is the biggest problem facing marriage these days:

Bipartisanship

I've been watching the Senate hearings on the judicial filibuster, I find it fascinating that the Republicans say that "the American people want congress to work together," That is the most backhanded underhanded way of saying, the American people want the Democrats to roll over. I really hope they don't, I really want the Democrats to grow a spine and stand up against the Bush Administration and give the people a real choice in government.

Oh by the way, what happened to Enron? Sigh.
